5 http://ammtiac.alionscience.com Direct metal deposition (DMD) is an advanced additive manufacturing technology that enables repair and rebuild of worn/damaged components, as well as manufacture of new components. The technology is an extension of rapid prototyping, however, in contrast to most rapid prototyping processes, DMD produces fully dense, functional metal parts. Parts are made directly from the computeraided design (CAD) drawing by depositing metal powder pixelby-pixel utilizing laser melting and a patented closed-loop control system to maintain dimension and quality).[1] The same process is extended for remanufacturing of damaged components, such as gas turbine blades and stator vanes (see Figure 1).[2, 3] Besides remanufacturing, DMD can build wear-resistant coatings and
